Types and Restrictions of Synthetic Food Colorings

Amaranth Red: According to the "Hygienic Standard for the Use of Food Additives" (GB2760-1996) of China, it can be used in high-sugar fruit juices (flavored) or juice-based beverages, carbonated drinks, blended alcoholic beverages, confectionery and pastry decorations, pickled plums, hawthorn products, and marinated vegetables. The maximum permitted usage level is 0.05 g/kg. For use in red and green shredded vegetables and dyed cherries (for decorative purposes), the maximum permitted usage level is 0.10 g/kg.

  Food additive manufacturers state that the types and restrictions of synthetic food colorings currently available on the market are mainly as follows:
  1. Amaranth Red: According to the "Hygienic Standard for the Use of Food Additives" (GB2760-1996) of China, it can be used in high-sugar fruit juices (flavored) or juice-based beverages, carbonated drinks, blended alcoholic beverages, confectionery and pastry decorations, pickled plums, hawthorn products, and marinated vegetables. The maximum permitted usage level is 0.05 g/kg. For use in red and green shredded vegetables and dyed cherries (for decorative purposes), the maximum permitted usage level is 0.10 g/kg.
  2. Carmine: According to the "Hygienic Standard for the Use of Food Additives" (GB 2760-1996) in China, it can be used in high-sugar fruit juices (flavored or unflavored), carbonated beverages, blended alcoholic drinks, confectionery and pastry decorations, pickled plums, hawthorn products, and marinated vegetables. The maximum permitted usage level is 0.05 g/kg. For red and green shredded vegetables and dyed cherries (for decorative purposes), the maximum permitted usage level is 0.10 g/kg. In soybean milk beverages and ice cream, the maximum permitted usage level is 0.025 g/kg (with a residual level of 0.01 g/kg). For shrimp-flavored chips, the maximum permitted usage level is 0.05 g/kg; for candy coatings, it is 0.10 g/kg.
  3. Red Flavoring: According to the “Hygienic Standard for the Use of Food Additives” (GB2760-1996) in China, it can be used as a coating for candies at a maximum usage level of 0.085 g/kg, and as an ingredient in ice cream and fried chicken seasonings at a maximum usage level of 0.07 g/kg.
  4. Sunset Yellow: According to China’s “Hygienic Standard for the Use of Food Additives” (GB2760-1996), this colorant can be used in high-sugar fruit juices (flavored) or juice-based beverages, carbonated drinks, blended alcoholic beverages, candies, confectionery decorations, watermelon jam canned products, green plums, lactic acid bacteria beverages, vegetable protein beverages, and shrimp-flavored chips at a maximum usage level of 0.10 g/kg. For candy coatings and red-green shredded candy, the maximum usage level is 0.20 g/kg. For use in ice cream, the maximum usage level is 0.09 g/kg.
  5. Lemon Yellow: According to the "Hygienic Standard for the Use of Food Additives" (GB2760-1996) of China, it can be used in high-sugar fruit juices (flavored) or juice-based beverages, carbonated drinks, blended alcoholic beverages, candies, decorative coatings on pastries, watermelon jam canned goods, green plums, shrimp-flavored chips, and pickled vegetables at a maximum usage level of 0.10 g/kg; in candy coatings and colored sugar threads, the maximum usage level is 0.20 g/kg; in ice cream, the maximum usage level is 0.02 g/kg; and in plant-based beverages and lactic acid bacteria beverages, the maximum usage level is 0.05 g/kg.
  6. Brilliant Blue: According to China’s “Hygienic Standard for the Use of Food Additives” (GB2760-1996), this colorant may be used in high-sugar fruit juices (flavored) or juice-based beverages, carbonated drinks, blended alcoholic beverages, candies, decorative toppings for pastries, and colored cherry canned goods (for decorative purposes only; not intended for consumption) at a maximum level of 0.10 g/kg. For pickled green plums and shrimp-flavored chips, the maximum permitted usage is 0.025 g/kg. In ice cream, the maximum allowable usage is 0.022 g/kg. For red and green shredded candy, the maximum permitted usage is 0.10 g/kg.
  7. Indigo: According to the "Hygienic Standard for the Use of Food Additives" (GB2760-1996) of China, it can be used in pickled vegetables at a maximum usage level of 0.01 mg/kg; in high-sugar fruit juices (flavored) or juice (flavored) beverages, carbonated drinks, blended spirits, candies, and confectionery decorations, as well as in colored cherry canned goods (for decorative purposes only and not intended for consumption), the maximum usage level is 0.10 g/kg. For green plums and shrimp-flavored slices, the maximum usage level is 0.025 g/kg; for red and green shredded vegetables, the maximum usage level is 0.20 g/kg.
